Deryl completed a 20-year career as an Army Combat Engineer, which included specialized Army Training in these areas: General Engineer, Explosives & Demolitions, Bridging, Safety Officer, Risk Manager. He was awarded the "DeFlury Medal" for a professional Army engineer career and inducted into AEA.

He is currently the Maintenance Supervisor for Arlington ISD's Facility Engineering. After leaving the military, Deryl looked for another way to serve, and at that time joined MARK-9. Deryl enjoys his human and canine colleagues and says he's having the time of his life continuing to serve mankind. Deryl learned one of a search team's most valuable lessons on the very first search he worked: everything is for the victims and their family members.
