Scuppy

Though never a search dog, Scuppy, a blind and deaf 23-year-old rescued Pomeranian, also served alongside human teammates with MARK-9. Owned by Susannah Charleson and Ellen Sanchez, Scuppy was adopted from a midcities animal shelter in January 2003. With Susannah, Scuppy participated in Sit & Stay sessions with young children, serving as an example of someone who knew what to do when lost — for in 2003 the newly-adopted little dog quickly learned that in his brand-new, unfamiliar backyard, if he got disoriented all he had to do was sit down, bark a little, and wait, and someone who loved him would come find him and take him back inside. Scuppy aptly demonstrated three of the Sit & Stay procedures the team teaches, and Fleta Kirk called the ancient Pomeranian "our little team mascot".

In July 2003, Scuppy received the Plano Police Department's Award of Recognition for his services during Sit & Stay presentations with their Vacation Safety School. He was popular with the children there, who would line up in wonder to pet the tiny dog three or four times older than they were. In January 2005, he began having small strokes and seizures, and Scuppy became too frail to make public appearances. His last days were spent at home snuggling on his blanket before the fire or being cuddled and spoiled with licks of peanut butter (the very best treat ever in the world, according to Scuppy). He left us on March 24th, 2005 — a soulful, graceful little Southern gentleman at the end of a very long life.
